You should 100% not be afraid to move there, in fact, I'd move back right now if the job was right. There is some theft and minor crimes, but nothing major. Sure, there are your everyday student accidents, and d.u.i's, but it's typical on a college campus. It's much safer than Atlanta, and it's a great place to have a family. Athens has a mall and a Walmart.and they probably have a Target too.Īthens is VERY safe! I love Athens! I never had any problems there and lived on all sides of the city. I am sure there would be enough churches, shopping and restaurants around to keep you engaged. I think for a single person like yourself or couple without kids.Athens would a good spot if you could live in an area that wasnt close to the crime. Both my brother inlaw and his wife work in Athens. It is a town that has a big church presence.in that is how you get to know people is by going to church. When they decided to buy a house and start their family.they did so in Jefferson, GA which about 20 minutes away(towards to I85) from Athens.schools are better there and it has a small town everyone knows you kinda feel. They had a rental house in a decent established neighborhood.and I am so sorry I cannot remember the part of town.but it wasnt close to the campus, maybe 10 minutes away. However, my brother inlaw and and his wife lived there for a few yrs after they graduated from UGA. Yes there is alot of crime in those areas that border the campus for the previous reasons stated. My brother in law works in law enforcement in Clark County in which Athens is located.
